I still remember the first time we went to Benidorm, we were looking to get our son out of town away from the annual Shrovetide Football and were looking for somewhere different.  We had heard so much bad publicity about Benidorm and thought let’s go check it out it will be a laugh, and we fell in love.  I must say our first trip was a little marred by the weather and location but that was due to lack of planning we saw the potential and while we have been to other places since we always come back to Benidorm (usually 3-4 times per year). And as we plan for our next visit June 2024 I start to write this post.

Why choose Benidorm for your holiday?

Benidorm, located on the eastern coast of Spain, has long been a popular destination for British holidaymakers. Its stunning beaches, warm climate, and vibrant atmosphere make it an ideal choice for a memorable holiday. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach getaway or an action-packed adventure, Benidorm has something to offer every type of traveller.

One of the main reasons to choose Benidorm is its beautiful sandy beaches. The town boasts two stunning main beaches, Levante and Poniente, both of which have been awarded Blue Flag status (I think right now they have given up Blue Flag status on one of the beaches) for their cleanliness and amenities. With crystal-clear waters and soft golden sand, these beaches provide the perfect setting for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying a range of water sports or if you are like us and not fond of sand you can sit at a beachside bar and soak up the atmosphere.

In addition to its beaches, Benidorm is also known for its lively nightlife which if you don’t choose wisely it can get rowdy. The town is home to numerous bars, clubs, and entertainment venues, ensuring that there’s always something happening after the sun goes down. Whether you’re looking for a quiet drink in an Old Town bar or a night of dancing and live music, Benidorm’s nightlife scene has it all.

Finally, Benidorm offers a wide range of attractions and activities for visitors of all ages. From theme parks and water parks to wildlife reserves and historical sites, there’s plenty to see and do in and around the town. Families will love the thrills and spills of Terra Mitica and Aqualandia, while nature lovers can explore the stunning natural beauty of the Serra Gelada Natural Park with the walk up to The Cross.

With its beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, and diverse range of attractions, Benidorm truly has something for everyone. It’s no wonder that so many British holidaymakers choose to visit this sunny Spanish resort year after year.

Researching your Benidorm holiday

Before you start booking your Benidorm holiday, it’s important to do some research to ensure that you make the most of your time in this vibrant town. Here are some tips to help you get started:

Decide on the best time to visit: Benidorm enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters with over 300 days of sunshine on average per year. The peak tourist season runs from June to September, when the weather is at it’s hottest and the town is bustling with visitors. If you prefer a quieter holiday, consider visiting in the shoulder seasons of spring or autumn when the weather is still pleasant but the crowds are smaller.

Bear in mind it does rain and boy does it come when it does, and if you are visiting in winter whilst it’s a lot warmer than the UK in the day you can generally get away with a T-shirt in the evening you will be requiring a jacket.

Explore accommodation options: Benidorm offers a wide range of accommodation options to suit every budget and preference. From luxury beachfront resorts to budget-friendly apartments, there’s something for everyone. Consider the location, amenities, and reviews but be aware that if somebody says a hotel doesn’t make British welcome it generally means most of the residents are Spanish and the food may be, authentic.  We generally stay in hotels that cater for Spanish and are always made welcome and you get the opportunity to try something a little different, isn’t that what travelling abroad is about or am I missing something?

Research local attractions and activities: Benidorm is home to a variety of attractions and activities that cater to all interests. Whether you’re a beach lover, thrill-seeker, or history buff, there’s something for you. Make a list of the top attractions you want to visit and research their opening times, ticket prices bearing in mind it may be cheaper to book before you arrive, and any special events or promotions that may be happening during your visit.

I would also look at food establishments if you have picky eaters or want to try something authentic you will be overwhelmed just walking around the streets but doing a little research first can save you time, money and a bad experience.

By conducting thorough research, you can ensure that your Benidorm holiday is well-planned and tailored to your preferences. Take the time to explore all the options available and create an itinerary that allows you to make the most of your time in this vibrant coastal town.

Planning your itinerary in Benidorm

Now that you’ve done your research, it’s time to plan your itinerary in Benidorm. With so much to see and do, it’s important to prioritise your activities and allocate your time wisely. Here are some tips to help you plan your days:

  1. Beach time: Benidorm is famous for its beautiful beaches, so make sure to dedicate some time to simply relaxing and soaking up the sun. Whether you prefer the lively atmosphere of Levante Beach or the more tranquil Poniente Beach, you’re guaranteed to find a spot to unwind and enjoy the Mediterranean breeze.  For me as a Brit the one thing I really love about Benidorm is just sitting in the sun listening to the sea, people watching and maybe having a cold beer or a cortado (short coffee) and brandy if it’s too early for beer.
  2. Visit the theme parks: Benidorm is home to several theme parks that offer fun and excitement for visitors of all ages. Terra Mitica, the largest theme park in the area, features thrilling rides, live shows, and themed areas that transport you to different civilisations. Aqualandia, a water park located near the town, is perfect for a day of splashing and sliding. Don’t forget to check out Mundomar, a marine and exotic animal park, where you can get up close and personal with dolphins, seals, and other fascinating creatures.  Got to say we did do Mundomar when the kids were younger and I’m not 100% sure who enjoyed it more.
  3. Explore the old town: Take a break from the beach and head to Benidorm’s old town, also known as the Casco Antiguo. Here, you’ll find narrow streets lined with charming shops, traditional Spanish restaurants, and historic buildings. Don’t miss the iconic blue-domed church of San Jaime, which offers stunning views of the town and the sea.
  4. Discover the natural beauty: Benidorm is not just about beaches and theme parks. The town is surrounded by stunning natural beauty, including the Serra Gelada Natural Park and the Algar Waterfalls. Embark on a hiking or cycling adventure and explore the picturesque landscapes and breathtaking views. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also try water sports such as kayaking or paddleboarding along the coast.

By planning your itinerary in advance, you can ensure that you make the most of your time in Benidorm and experience everything this vibrant town has to offer. Remember to leave some flexibility in your schedule for spontaneous adventures and relaxation.

Finding the perfect accommodation in Benidorm

Finding the perfect accommodation is an essential part of planning your holiday in Benidorm, I cannot stress this too much.  Choose your hotel wisely, we are staying in Voramar in June 24  we love this hotel but it is noisy mainly due to Vincents across the road, so we just pack earplugs and all is good With a wide range of options available, it’s important to consider your preferences, budget, and the location of your chosen accommodation. Here are some tips to help you find the perfect place to stay:

  1. Location: Consider the location of your accommodation and how it aligns with your plans and preferences. If you want to be close to the beach and nightlife, look for accommodations in the Levante area. If you prefer a quieter atmosphere, consider staying in the Poniente area or the nearby town of Albir. Additionally, check the proximity of your accommodation to public transportation and key attractions.  We have stayed New Town, Finestrat, La Cala before settling in the Old Town and would generally not stay anywhere else in Benidorm why because Old Town is where we like to spend our evenings, hotels are generally smaller and quieter and the food is more authentic.
  2. Amenities: Think about the amenities that are important to you. Do you prefer a hotel with a pool or a self-catering apartment with a kitchen? Consider the facilities and services offered by different accommodations, such as Wi-Fi, air conditioning, parking, and breakfast options. Make a list of your must-have amenities to narrow down your choices.  Aircon really is a must in summer do not underestimate how hot and humid it can get at 2am when you are trying to get to sleep.
  3. Budget: Set a budget for your accommodation and stick to it. Benidorm offers a range of options to suit every budget, from luxury resorts to budget-friendly guesthouses. Consider the time of year you’re visiting, as prices may vary during peak tourist seasons. Look for any deals or promotions that may be available to save money on your accommodation.  I would also look at B&B compared to Half Board options eating out of an evening can get quite expensive, gone are the days of Benidorm being cheap and for a few extra Euros you can upgrade to Half Board and still go out to eat a few nights a week for a special treat.
  4. Reviews: Read reviews from previous guests to get an idea of the quality and service provided by different accommodations. Websites such as TripAdvisor and Booking.com are great resources for finding reviews, just read between the lines.  Personally, I look at the images focusing on traveller images as these will show you what to expect. Pay attention to the overall rating, as well as the specific comments regarding cleanliness, staff friendliness, and location.  As already mentioned be aware that people slate hotels as anti-British this is never the case it’s more that they cater for Spanish holiday makers.

By considering these factors and doing thorough research, you can find the perfect accommodation that meets your needs and enhances your overall holiday experience in Benidorm.

Booking your flights and transportation

Once you’ve decided on your accommodation, it’s time to book your flights and arrange transportation for your holiday in Benidorm. Here are some tips to help you with this process:

  1. Flights: Start by searching for flights to Alicante Airport, which is the closest international airport to Benidorm. Compare prices from different airlines and consider booking well in advance to secure the best deals. Be flexible with your travel dates, as flying midweek or during off-peak seasons can often result in lower fares.I often use Jet2 to find the cheapest time of the month and then Skyscanners to find the best deals, also bear in mind it’s not always cheapest to buy accommodation and flights separately you can get a good package deal at times.
  2. Transportation from the airport: After arriving at Alicante Airport, you’ll need to arrange transportation to Benidorm. There are several options available, including taxis, private transfers, and public transportation. Taxis are the most convenient option, but they can be more expensive, it is always cheaper to book before you arrive and you won’t also be queuing. If you’re on a budget, consider taking the C6 bus, which runs regularly between the airport and Benidorm.
  3. Getting around Benidorm: Benidorm has a well-connected public transportation system, making it easy to explore the town and its surrounding areas. Buses are the most common mode of transportation and cover most of the popular tourist spots. You can purchase a rechargeable travel card, known as the Benidorm Bus Card, which offers discounted fares on buses. Taxis are also readily available and can be hailed from the street or booked through a taxi app.

By booking your flights and arranging transportation in advance, you can ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey to Benidorm, allowing you to start your holiday on a positive note.

Tips for a memorable holiday in Benidorm

To ensure that your holiday in Benidorm is truly unforgettable, here are some additional tips to keep in mind:

  1. Stay hydrated: Benidorm can get hot, especially during the summer months. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated and prevent heat-related illnesses. Carry a reusable water bottle with you and refill it whenever possible. If you are drinking you should really think about your water intake
  2. Apply sunscreen: Protect your skin from the strong Mediterranean sun by applying sunscreen regularly. Use a high SPF sunscreen and reapply it every few hours, especially if you’re spending time at the beach or engaging in outdoor activities.  Again we see lots of young Brits drinking and not thinking about how red they are turning, the sun in Spain is dangerous, apply sunscreen before you go out, reapply as needed and I always take aftersun and apply it in the evening even if I haven’t burnt.
  3. Respect local customs: Benidorm is a popular tourist destination, but it’s important to respect the local customs and traditions. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites, be mindful of noise levels in residential areas, and follow any rules or guidelines set by the local authorities.
  4. Learn some basic Spanish: While many people in Benidorm speak English, it’s always appreciated when visitors make an effort to speak a few basic phrases in Spanish. Learn some common greetings, thank you, and please to enhance your interactions with the locals and show your appreciation for their culture.
  5. Be cautious with your belongings: Like any tourist destination, Benidorm can attract pickpockets and petty thieves. Keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded areas, and use lockers or safes provided by your accommodation to secure your valuables.
