Introduction

Benidorm, a popular holiday destination on Spain’s Mediterranean coast, offers more than just beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife. Just minutes away from the bustling streets, you can escape into nature and embark on breathtaking hikes that showcase the stunning landscapes surrounding the town. So, put on your sturdy shoes, pack some snacks, and get ready to explore the natural wonders of Benidorm.

Sierra Helada Natural Park: This park is located to the east of Benidorm and offers stunning coastal and mountain views. There are several hiking trails that lead you through diverse landscapes, including cliffs, coves, and Mediterranean vegetation. One such walk is the La Creu de Benidorm or the walk to the Cross.

History

The famous cross of Benidorm is perched on top of the Sierra Gelada Natural Park, and stands at about 438 meters above the sea. The first cross was put up in 1961, and it was made of wood. The villagers carried it on their shoulders all the way from San Jaime church in the old town. This special day became known as the “day of forgiveness” because the local Catholic monks wanted to show that the village hadn’t lost its values despite some tourists wearing skimpy Bikini outfits, which was considered a big no-no at that time. Even though they had permission from General Franco to wear Bikinis on the beach, the village was criticised by the Bishop of Orihuela, Alicante, who said the Mayor and residents might go to hell for allowing such sinful clothing.

Nowadays, when you visit, you’ll see a big metal Cross that was put up in 1975, made from pieces of old railway tracks, and tourists and residents wear somewhat less than in 1961.

The Walk

For breathtaking panoramic views of Benidorm and its surroundings, the Cross Route, also known as La Creu de Benidorm, is a must. This easy hike takes you to the Sierra Helada National Park, where you’ll find a cross that was erected on a hill in 1975. From this vantage point, you can admire the stunning vistas of Benidorm, its beautiful beaches, and towering skyscrapers. On a clear day, you can even catch a glimpse of Puig Campana, the second-highest peak in the Alicante province. The hike starts from McDonald’s at Av Madrid and covers a distance of 2.3 kilometres, which can be completed in just over an hour or if you are Google 39 mins.
